Bringing the Community Together to Rehouse a Family

In early August of 2024, Sarah reached out to Caring Coalition after facing a series of devastating challenges. She and her four children had been evicted from their modest apartment. Faced with the difficult decision of working nights or caring for her family—especially her child with special needs—she chose to prioritize her child's well-being. As a result, Sarah lost her job, and by August, the inevitable eviction notice arrived. Forced to leave their apartment with only a few belongings, Erica and her children found themselves without a permanent place to stay. For about a week, they camped in the living rooms of friends and family, sometimes even spending nights in their car.

In response, Caring Coalition volunteers launched a GoFundMe campaign and shared a message on Facebook. Within 72 hours, the community came together in an extraordinary display of generosity. The donations poured in! $1500 was raised through GoFundMe. Along with other private donations, the community rehoused this family in an apartment. Coronado neighbors came together, providing the family with furniture, kitchen essentials, bedding, and other necessities. The outpouring of support was overwhelming, providing trucks and volunteers to deliver these items, even in 115-degree heat.

Sarah and her children were able to find a safe and comfortable home. The most heartwarming aspect of this story was the involvement of Erica’s 15-year-old daughter, Elsa. She rallied her friends who joined forces with Coronado neighbors to collect furniture, bedding, and other essential items. Observing her delight with each donated item was priceless.
